A training workshop on party work and electoral law

The Masarat Jordanian Foundation for Development and Progress, in collaboration with the King Abdullah II Fund for Development, organized a training workshop at Yarmouk University in Irbid Governorate under the title "Party Work and the Political System of the Jordanian State and the Election Law," with the participation of 25 academic and administrative women working at the university.
The two-day workshop aimed to enhance participants' awareness of democratic concepts and political and civil participation.
Day 1:
The first day included a comprehensive presentation on the concepts of democracy, citizenship, and political and civil participation. The discussions addressed the foundations and indicators of democracy, active citizenship, levels of political participation, and forms of civic engagement.
Additionally, the workshop covered the structure of political parties, including the concepts of political parties, other forms of organization, the roles and functions of political parties, their various classifications, components of effective parties, elements of a party's charter, standards for party work, party structures, and party ideologies.
The session also explored the history of Jordanian women's political and party engagement throughout the nation's history and the evolution of Jordanian legislation. This included an overview of the legislative process in Jordan through the legislative authority and an examination of active democratic forces in society, such as the three branches of government, the media, and civil society, and their roles.
Day 2:
The second day began with a review of the components of the first day to create connections within the training content. This was followed by a presentation on the political modernization process in Jordan, defining political modernization, its requirements, principles, and the main outputs of the Committee for Modernizing the Political System in Jordan.
The session also highlighted key provisions of the new Political Parties Law of 2022, including the definition of political parties in the Jordanian context, legal protections provided under the law for party membership and affiliation, opportunities afforded by the law for women to engage in party work, and key provisions of the law that emphasize programmatic parties and enhance the participation of women and youth. Financial resources for parties, both private and governmental, were also discussed.
The workshop further addressed the new Election Law of 2022, highlighting international standards for democratic elections and the guarantees provided by Jordanian legislation for the electoral and procedural processes. Topics included the concept of electoral systems and their forms applied in Jordan, the definition and mechanisms for implementing the electoral threshold, the divisions of electoral districts, and the methods for vote counting in both local and general constituencies.
