Enhancing Green Employment in Jordan: Challenges and Opportunities Towards a Sustainable Economy

Introduction

In recent years, the concept of sustainable employment, often called "green jobs," has gained increasing attention as the world tackles environmental degradation and the effects of climate change. Green jobs encompass work that contributes to preserving or restoring the environment, spanning industries such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and waste management. These jobs not only foster environmental sustainability but also offer economic growth, social inclusion, and poverty reduction opportunities. As countries strive to balance economic development with environmental protection, green jobs have become a global priority.

Jordan faces significant environmental challenges, including water scarcity, reliance on imported energy, and land degradation, making the transition to a green economy particularly urgent. With a young and growing population, Jordan’s labor market must adapt to provide sustainable employment opportunities that meet economic needs while addressing critical environmental issues. Green employment offers a pathway to reduce unemployment, especially among youth, while supporting long-term environmental sustainability. However, the country faces numerous obstacles, including resource shortages, insufficient policy frameworks, and workforce skill gaps.

This paper explores the current status of green employment in Jordan, focusing on the challenges the country faces in expanding sustainable job opportunities and the potential benefits of this transition. By examining the barriers and opportunities in sectors such as renewable energy, agriculture, and waste management, this paper proposes strategies to increase green employment in Jordan, contributing to both the country’s economic resilience and environmental sustainability goals.
