Talal Ghoneimat: Jordan’s Firm Stance Amid Regional Turmoil
Amid a critical phase in the region, Jordan faces unprecedented developments that present complex and dangerous challenges, prompting the kingdom to adopt decisive positions on various fronts. In his speech at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, His Majesty King Abdullah II delivered a powerful message with profound strategic and political implications.
The King’s movements and gestures carried significant weight and deserve careful interpretation, particularly by the international community, including Israel. His address was not just to the United Nations but a global recalibration, highlighting the crisis of legitimacy faced by international institutions and the growing mistrust in the global order.
His Majesty’s remarks on the regional situation reflected a deep understanding of the unfolding events. He drew on his experience as a soldier in a conflict-ridden region, emphasizing the stark contrast between traditional wars and today’s extraordinary violence since October 7th. His observations underscored the urgent need to address these dangers.
In a powerful statement, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah warned of the "dangerous precedent" that Israel’s atrocities in Gaza could set for the world. She urged the international community to leverage its political influence to end the war and facilitate humanitarian aid. Her remarks were not just about Gaza’s suffering but a warning about Israel’s betrayal of guarantees designed to safeguard global security.
On the military front, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Major General Yousef Al-Hunaiti conducted a field visit to the Royal Fifth Border Guard Battalion in the Eastern Military Zone. He reviewed the army’s readiness to counter infiltration attempts and the smuggling of weapons and drugs. This visit sent a clear message: Jordan, with its military legacy, is resolute in protecting its borders and internal stability, regardless of the challenges.
The Road Ahead: Threats Beyond Borders
Jordan’s internal and external maneuvers coincide with escalating Israeli actions in Gaza and Lebanon, raising concerns about the potential opening of a new front in the West Bank, directly affecting Jordan. Israeli military movements across multiple fronts compel Jordan to adopt exceptional preparedness. This calls for unity among Jordanians and a concerted effort to face these challenges. Political parties and Jordanian media are urged to adopt a responsible national discourse that strengthens internal cohesion and raises public awareness of the stakes at hand.
Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi reinforced this sentiment, stating that Jordan will not be a battleground for any party and that the Jordan Armed Forces will not allow breaches of Jordan’s sovereignty. His statements underline Jordan’s resolve to remain a stronghold against any threats.
Today, Jordan stands at the heart of a new phase, demanding vigilance and caution. The challenges, both internal and external, are intertwined. However, through unity, the determination of its armed forces, and the strength of its diplomacy, Jordan can confront these threats and withstand any escalation.
